Goodyear Packaging is proud to support Recycle Week.
Did you know that 25.7 million tonnes of waste was generated by households in the UK alone in 2022?
Figures from the UK Government show that just over two fifths of that household waste (44.1 per cent) was recycled.
In 2023, the UK generated 12.7 million tonnes of packaging waste, with 62 per cent of that being recycled.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, paper and cardboard were the most used packaging materials at 5.4 million tonnes. They had a 73 per cent recycle rate.
But for plastics (2.3 million tonnes used) the recycling rate dropped to just 53 per cent.
These figures illustrate why the upcoming Recycle Week is so important.
What Is Recycle Week 2024?
Recycle Week runs from 14 to 20 October and is now in its 21st year,
It promotes the importance of recycling and ensuring that recyclable items do not end up in their rubbish bins.
Recycle Week brings together retailers, brands, and eco-friendly packaging providers – like us at Goodyear Packaging – to inspire the public to think more about recycling and sustainability.
Why is recycling important?
Recycling helps to reduce the need for extracting and processing raw materials, such as oil and wood, which creates pollution in its own right.
It saves energy needed to process raw materials and turn them into the packaging and products we use. In doing so, it cuts carbon emissions.
And recycling reduces the waste that ends up in landfill, in our oceans, and harming our wildlife.
