| PPWR: A practical guide to avoiding packaging compliance pitfalls
Don’t let the volume of PPWR requirements hold you back. Start with the basics: establish exactly what goes intoeach packaging format and keep the supporting evidence in one place. When a customer asks you tosubstantiate a claim, your team can respond without searching through emails. Most provisions have applied since 12 August 2026; the remaining requirements follow their own implementation timelines.

Even a minor packaging change can undermine compliance. The changes that slip through are often the least visible: the outer box stays the same, but the coating, adhesive or insert changes. Does the existing test report still cover the revised packaging? Review sales, grouped and transport packaging together. A single material substitution can affect recyclability, product protection and production consistency.
Multiple compliance deadlines are manageable. Conflicting versions across teams are the real risk. Food contact, labelling, recyclability, recycled plastic content, empty-space ratios and reuse each have their own timelines. The challenge is keeping design, procurement and compliance teams working from the same information. Create a single tracker by packaging format and market so everyone works from an agreed version.

You don’t need a complex system to prevent rework ahead of production. Start with four folders: packaging bills of materials; supplier declarations and test reports; dimensions, weights and empty-space data; and evidence to substantiate environmental claims. Basic document control can prevent much of the last-minute rework that arises when teams discover inconsistencies in the paperwork just before mass production begins.
With the documentation in order, compliance concerns become practical tasks: assess materials, simplify packaging structures, produce unprinted prototypes and run tests. GOODYEAR can use its in-house testing capabilities to identify issues during prototyping and resolve them before they disrupt production.

Is your packaging documentation still spread across suppliers, email inboxes and old folders? You don’t need to organise everything before you start. Send us an existing packaging specification, and we’ll work with you to identify what’s confirmed, where evidence is missing and which tests to run next. Your brand’s specialist advisers should confirm which legal requirements apply.
